Mark Hamill Defends the STAR WARS Prequel Trilogy
I actually appreciate the Star Wars prequel films a lot more now than I did after I initially watched them all those years ago. That’s all thanks to the sequel trilogy. The sequel trilogy had no real structure or flow, and the story those films told are all kind of a mess. The prequel trilogy actually has a strong and cohesive story compared to that. They weren’t perfect, and there’s plenty to nitpick, but at its core, it did tell a solid story.
Star Wars franchise star Mark Hamill recently opened up about the prequel trilogy sharing his thoughts on it and being the positive guy that he tends to be, he defends the films. He shared in J.W. Rinzler's book Howard Kazanjian: A Producer's Life:
"I was impressed the prequels had their own identity. They were criticized because they were exposition-heavy and more cerebral and probably, like he said back in 1976, they weren't as commercial. It's a darker story. But in the age of social media, people's voices are amplified, and I'm shocked at how brutal they can be, not just in the case of Star Wars films, but across the board."
The prequel films consist of The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith and they continue to be heavily criticized. Bu, there are fans out there that grew up with these films and unapologetically love them.
Star Wars editor Marcia Lucas also talked about The Phantom Menace for the book, and she had different thoughts than Hamill. She said:
"When I went to see Episode 1 – I had a friend who worked at ILM, who took me as a guest to a preview – I cried. I cried because I didn't think it was very good. And I thought [George Lucas] had such a rich vein to mine, a rich palette to tell stories with. He had all those characters. There were things I didn’t like about the casting, and things I didn't like about the story… it was a lot of eye candy. CG."
She also talked about. the sequel triloigy saying, "The storylines are terrible. Just terrible. Awful. You can quote me – 'J.J. Abrams, [Lucasfilm President] Kathy Kennedy – talk to me.'"
What do you all think about the Star Wars prequel trilogy these days? What do you think about what Hamill had to say about them?
