Mark Ruffalo Discusses Hulk's Future in the MCU and What He Would Like To Explore in a Standalone Movie
The future of the Bruce Banner/The Hulk in the MCU is still wide open. Marvel Studios is not done with the character yet. There’s talk of him appearing in the Disney+ She-Hulk series, but Ruffalo would also like to finally get his standalone movie.
While discussing the future of The Hulk in the MCU with Variety, Ruffalo said:
“There’s nothing completely at a place where it’s a done deal. There’s some talk of having Banner/Hulk show up in [the Disney+ series] She-Hulk. If we come up with something good, that would be really interesting. Right now that’s about it. That’s all there is on the table.”
He went on to share what he would like to see in a standalone Hulk film if he finally ever got to make one:
“There’s an idea that I think could be really interesting. We’ve never really followed him into his life. He’s always kind of off on the side. He’s like the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of the Avengers. It’d be interesting to fill in all the blanks about what happened to him in between all these movies.”
I’d totally be up for that! There are certainly a lot of gaps to fill! This is what the new Black Widow movie is doing and it could also totally work for Hulk. Hell, that could even work as a Disney+ series. Ruffalo also reiterated that he would like to see Wolverine and Hulk face off. This is something that fans have been wanting to see for years and with Marvel now owning the right to Wolverine again, it could totally happen!
The actor also talked about how he was initially apprehensive about playing Bruce Banner/The Hulk. The technological hurdles nearly convinced him to turn the role down when director Joss Whedon and co-star Robert Downey Jr. approached him about appearing in 2012’s The Avengers:
“I did try to talk them out of casting me. I said, ‘I don’t know if I’m the right guy, I’ve never done anything like this.’ Between Joss [Whedon] and Robert [Downey Jr.], they were pretty convincing that I could do it. I was scared. I was really scared. I’m still scared. The technological aspect of it makes it really hard to work that way. I struggle with it all the time. But my motto is make fear your friend. Just keep pushing yourself into those places where you feel scared or challenged.”
Well, whatever hurdles he’s faced, he’s been able to get through them! The fans love what Ruffalo is bringing to The Hulk and I hope we get to see a lot more of him in the MCU’s future.
