Marlon Wayans Says SCARY MOVIE 6 Will “Cancel the Cancel Culture” and Bring Comedy Back to Theaters

Marlon Wayans is officially reprising his fan-favorite role as Shorty Meeks in Scary Movie 6, and he’s making it clear that this next chapter in the horror-comedy franchise has a mission. According to Wayans, it’s time to bring big, unapologetic laughs back to the big screen.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Wayans described the new film as something that hits audiences of all ages while also taking aim at today’s cultural climate. He said:

“What we’re trying to do is bring back laughter. This is about bringing back comedy the way it used to be. And I think the only way to do it is you have to cancel the cancel culture.”

That sets the tone for what fans can expect from Scary Movie 6. The franchise has always thrived on going after everything and everyone, from blockbuster horror hits to pop culture chaos. This time around, it sounds like nothing is off limits.

Wayans made it clear that the creative approach hasn’t changed.

“We’re gonna do what we always do. We’re gonna make fun of everybody because we’re equal opportunity offenders. We have a recipe, we have a formula that you can’t mimic or copy. You could try, but it’s very specific.

“It’s how we grew up, and it’s how we see the world. It’s the household we were raised in with the sense of humor that we all were governed with, that we inherited from our mother.”

That “recipe” has been part of the DNA of the Scary Movie franchise since it first hit theaters in 2000. The original film flipped horror tropes upside down and turned them into outrageous comedy moments that instantly became part of pop culture.

Now, with the Wayans family returning in full force, this sixth installment looks like it’s aiming to recapture that raw, chaotic energy.

Wayans also explained that while the comedy will push boundaries, it won’t be reckless. He said they “like to be fearless” but “still do things with kid gloves to let people laugh at themselves.”

That balance between edgy and playful has always been the sweet spot for the franchise. It’s satire that invites audiences in on the joke rather than shutting them out.

Scary Movie 6 is directed by Michael Tiddes and written by Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Craig Wayans, and Rick Alvarez.

The cast is packed with returning favorites and new faces. Marlon Wayans stars alongside Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Damon Wayans Jr., Gregg Wayans, Kim Wayans, Benny Zielke, Cameron Scott, Cheri Oteri, Chris Elliott, Dave Sheridan, Heidi Gardner, Lochlyn Munro, Olivia Rose Keegan, Ruby Snowber, Savannah Lee Nassif, Sydney Park, and more.

The horror genre is thriving right now, which gives Scary Movie 6 a lot of material to tear into. From elevated psychological thrillers to legacy sequels and streaming-era scream queens, there’s no shortage of targets.

If Wayans and company stick to their formula, audiences can expect sharp parody, absurd gags, and moments that will probably have social media arguing the next morning.

Scary Movie 6 hits theaters on June 5, and it sounds like the goal is to get people back in seats, laughing together, and maybe ruffling a few feathers along the way.
