Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio's H.H. Holmes Serial Killer Project THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY Is Headed To Hulu

Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio have been looking to develop a film based on the book The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic And Madness At The Fair That Changed America for years.

Well, the project is finally moving forward at Hulu, and instead of a film, it will be developed as a series, which is even better as far as storytelling goes! It will be called Devil in the White City, and DiCaprio was set to star in the film, and Scorsese was going to direct, but we have yet to see if they will be involved with the series beyond producers. I hope they are! I’d love to see DiCaprio star and Scorsese direct. It’d be a shame if they didn’t.

The movie is based on the true story of Doctor H.H. Holmes, who was one of the most insane and horrific serial killers that has walked this Earth. He has been labeled as America’s first serial killer, and what this guy did was absolutely terrifying! The story is set in 19th century Chicago during the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago.

Holmes admitted to killing 27 people, but in reality killed closer to 200 people. He built The World’s Fair Hotel, which was an inn for people to stay while visiting, but it was nightmarishly lethal. The sociopath used his charming demeanor to lure guests into his hotel, which has since been come to be known as murder castle. Why? Because Holmes included a gas chamber, crematorium, and a dissecting table where he would murder his victims and strip their skeletons to sell for medical and scientific study. When Homes was arrested he told police:

"I was born with the devil in me. I could not help the fact that I was a murderer, no more than the poet can help the inspiration to sing — I was born with the 'Evil One' standing as my sponsor beside the bed where I was ushered into the world, and he has been with me since."

I included a podcast episode about Holmes that you can listen to below. It will give you a better idea of this man, and how this movie is going to play out. There’s also a documentary on Netflix that you can watch called H.H. Holmes: America's First Serial Killer.

I’ll be looking forward to seeing how this series turns out!

Welcome to Serial Killers. Our first episode covers H.H. Holmes, known as America's first serial killer. In 1895, he confessed to 27 murders and was found guilty of 9 but may have killed up to 200 people. His Chicago home was dubbed the "Murder Castle" due to its labyrinthine design, secret torture rooms and bodies buried in the basement.

H.H. Holmes spent his life committing insurance fraud and treating people like objects. When his crimes caught up to him, Holmes gave false confessions claiming to have murdered people who are still alive and well, and some whose bodies could not be found. Why would he do this?
