Martin Scorsese's KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON Gets a Great New Trailer
Apple TV+ has released a full trailer for Martin Scorsese’s incredible-looking film Killers of the Flower Moon, which tells the dark and tragic story of greed and murder in the heart of America. This movie looks incredible, and it’s based on David Grann’s book, Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI. The movie is set in 1920s Oklahoma and depicts the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation, a string of brutal crimes that came to be known as the Reign of Terror.
Leonardo DiCaprio stars in the film as Ernest Burkhart, and he is joined by Lily Gladstone as Mollie Burkhart, an Osage married to Ernest, who is the nephew of a powerful local rancher, played by Robert De Niro. Brendan Fraser (The Mummy) and Jesse Plemons (Antlers) also star in the movie. The synopsis reads:
At the end of the nineteenth century, the Osage Indians were driven onto a presumed worthless expanse of land in northeastern Oklahoma. But their territory turned out to be atop one of the largest oil deposits in the United States; to obtain that oil, prospectors were required to pay the tribe for leases and royalties. By the 1920s, the members of Osage Nation had become the wealthiest people per capita in the world. And then the Osage began to die under mysterious circumstances.
In a recent interview with Empire Gladstone talked about the movie’s perception as “Martin Scorsese’s Western” and how it’s actually closer to a tragedy.
“A lot of people are really wanting to call this ‘Martin Scorsese’s Western,'” Gladstone stated before clarifying that it’s actually “a great American tragedy … With natives and Westerns, we are so dehumanized that it just kind of feels like we’re part of the landscape — instead of humans that are telling a story.”
The actress then discussed her own experience of growing up on a reservation and how the film’s story was familiar to her:
“Having grown up on my reservation in Montana, in the American West and Indian country, it was very familiar to see this goofy, exaggerated cowboy sort of a character falling for a really self-possessed native woman. That’s just such a familiar dynamic. And that was backed up by a lot of community stories that we had heard.”
When previously talking about the film, screenwriter Eric Roth shared: “This was a unique story that I knew nothing about. It showed my ignorance. I thought, ‘It’s unbelievable, it could be a Western.’ Marty’s never done a Western. It’s the first time you’ll see a street scene where there’s 90 percent Native American indigenous people, and 1 or 2 percent Caucasians.”
He also explained that this movie is “nothing we’ve ever seen” and that it’ll be “one for the ages,” saying: “I know Marty’s trying to make a movie that’s probably the last Western that would be made like this, and yet, with this incredible social document underneath it, and the violence and the environment. I think it’ll be like nothing we’ve ever seen, in a way. And so this one is, to me, one for the ages.”
The movie will get a limited theatrical release on October 6th, 2023, with a wide theatrical release that will follow on October 20, 2023. Watch the trailer and tell us what you think.
