Martin Freeman Teases Marvel's SECRET INVASION Series, Calling It "Pretty Dark" and Different From Other Marvel Projects

Actor Martin Freeman first appeared in the MCU in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War as Everett Ross, a former CIA agent who has been tasked with overseeing the Avengers. He then went on to work with T’Challa and Shuri, who saved his life in Black Panther, and we saw him again in Marvel’s most recent film, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Now the actor is bringing his character to the upcoming series Secret Invasion, which is headed to Disney+ next year. The series “centers on Fury and Talos — who first met during the events of Captain Marvel — and a faction of shape-shifting Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for years.”

Ben Mendelsohn is back as Talos, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, and Don Cheadle as War Machine. Also appearing in the series is Kingsley Ben-Adir (Peaky Blinders), Killian Scott (Love/Hate), Carmen Ejogo (Fantastic Beasts), Christopher McDonald (Ballers), and Olivia Colman (The Crown).

In a recent interview with Digital Spy, Freeman described the series, saying:

"It feels pretty different to stuff I’ve seen. It does feel like a little departure. Yeah, it does – in ways that I wouldn’t be that able to describe. Again, I’ve not seen it. I’ve not even read all of it. The bits I’ve read do feel different, I guess: Because of the nature of television, you can luxuriate in things a little bit more. That storytelling process is just elongated. So you have got more time to get those knotty problems out, which is the beauty of television at the moment.”

Freeman revealed that the tone of the series is "pretty dark," both "figuratively and literally. It was a bit murky, actually. A bit murky. Quite labyrinthine in terms of storytelling, and the amount of people crossing over with each other."

When asked what it was like taking the character of Ross from Black Panther to Secret Invasion, the actor replied:

"I go wherever they tell me to go. You know what I mean? I’m a bit like Ross in that way. I’m just an agent who goes over there or over there. I just like playing him. I like playing him in whatever kind of situations they want to put him in because he does bits of action and bits of espionage and bits of thinky-talky things, but also bits of running around. He’s generally, we hope, on the side of good, but it’s always quite ambiguous. It’s ambiguous. And I enjoy that because I think life is ambiguous."

Freeman also explained that while Ross has a "very supporting role," and "it's not The Ross Show by any means," the character still has a "nice part" which is "definitely worthwhile."

I am looking forward to this series. I have loved most of the Disney+ MCU shows that we’ve seen so far, and I think this one will tell a good story.

Secret Invasion will premiere on Disney+ in 2023. Are you looking forward to watching?
