Marvel Announces ZODIAC, a New MCU Spy Thriller Series Coming to Disney+

Marvel Television just dropped a cool little surprise at New York Comic Con with the announcement of Zodiac, a new live-action spy thriller series headed to Disney+ in 2028.

I was in the room for the panel when the news hit, and yeah, as you imagine, there was a lot of excitement from the crowd.

This is exactly the kind of Marvel project that gets fans instantly theorizing, especially when the studio gives us just enough to chew on without opening the whole mystery box.

Marvel Television chief Brad Winderbaum confirmed during the NYCC panel that casting for Zodiac will begin in the “next couple of weeks.”

The series is also expected to start filming next year, but Marvel hasn’t revealed the creative team yet or shared any real story details.

What we do know is that Zodiac is being described as an action spy thriller, which is always a fun corner of the MCU to play in.

Marvel has gone down this road before with mixed results, but when the spy stuff hits, it can be some of the franchise’s most entertaining material.

The logo shown at the panel has already kicked off speculation that Zodiac could have ties to SHIELD, the secretive organization once led by Nick Fury.

That is enough to get longtime Marvel fans interested, especially since SHIELD has been sitting on the sidelines in a big way for quite some time.

In the comics, Zodiac has a few different meanings. One version is the Zodiac cartel, a criminal organization with ambitions of global economic and political control.

Another version involved a mysterious villain using the Zodiac name during the Dark Reign storyline.

Either route could give Marvel a slick espionage story with plenty of room for conspiracies, double-crosses, and shadowy power players.

If SHIELD really is part of the story, Zodiac would be Marvel’s second major live-action series to explore the organization after Agents of SHIELD, which launched after The Avengers and ran for seven seasons.

That show built a passionate fanbase, so it’ll be interesting to see how Marvel handles the organization in the current MCU timeline.

Of course, Marvel’s most recent spy-thriller swing, Secret Invasion, didn’t exactly land well with fans or critics.

That series had Samuel L. Jackson back as Nick Fury, but it struggled to deliver on the promise of its paranoia-filled premise.

Jackson has since confirmed he will return to the MCU in Avengers: Secret Wars, so there’s already plenty of room for fans to wonder whether Fury, SHIELD, or both could factor into Zodiac in some way.

Winderbaum wasn’t giving up anything beyond the basics at the panel, so for now, let the speculation begin.

The title, the logo, the spy-thriller angle, and the possible SHIELD connection are enough to make this one of Marvel’s more intriguing upcoming Disney+ projects.

Zodiac is set to premiere on Disney+ in 2028, the year after Avengers: Secret Wars.
