Marvel Comics Sets Shuri Up To Be The New Black Panther, Could We See This Happen in The MCU Films?

For those of you who don’t know, Marvel Comics has given the Black Panther character Shuri her own ongoing series. The first issue of Shuri has been released and it’s leading to a big change with Black Panther.

The comic is setting her up to take on the mantle of Black Panther because with the absence of T’Challa, the women of Wakanda believe the country needs a Black Panther to show that they are strong.

In the story, Shuri is called to a traditional secret of meeting of Wakanda women called the Elephant's Trunk. With Wakanda in trouble, Shuri's mother Queen Ramonda felt she needed to gather together the group again because T'Challa has been missing for a couple weeks.

Despite the fact that he isn't the ruler of Wakanda anymore because Wakanda is a constitutional monarchy now, they still need a Black Panther to represent and protect them.

The country doesn’t know that T’Challa has been missing and the group is debating whether or not to tell the people of Wakanda about it. They eventually decide to keep that info to themselves and that they need to appear strong, and so Shuri is asked to become Black Panther:

“The people call you Princess Shuri. The ancestors call you Ancient Future. I call you my daughter. But for a time you were called something else, and we need you to take up that name once again. Shuri, for the sake of Wakanda, will you step up and be the Black Panther?”

She doesn’t give an answer. We’ll have to wait for issue #2, but it’s not hard to imagine that she’ll say yes and take on the mantel. They are obviously setting her up for the new Black Panther.

The question is, will this storyline end up finding its way into the MCU? The fans loved Shuri in the first Black Panther movie and it’s very possible that somewhere down the line, Shuri could become Black Panther. After all, Marvel is really pushing lead female characters as they move into Phase 4, so it wouldn’t surprise me.

If Shuri does become Black Panther do you think we’ll see a version of this storyline introduced to the MCU?

Here are the details for Shuri #1:

Shuri #1 is written by Nnedi Okorafor and drawn by Leonardo Romero with a cover by Samuel Spratt, and you can find the official description for the book below.

"FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE BLACK PANTHER! The world fell in love with her in the movie. Now, the Black Panther’s techno-genius sister launches her own adventures — written by best-selling Afrofuturist author Nnedi Okorafor and drawn by Eisner-nominated artist Leonardo Romero! The Black Panther has disappeared, lost on a mission in space. And in his absence, everyone’s looking at the next in line for the throne. But Shuri is happiest in a lab, surrounded by gadgets of her own creation. She’d rather be testing gauntlets than throwing them. But a nation without a leader is a vulnerable one — and Shuri may have to choose between Wakanda’s welfare and her own."

Shuri #1 is in comic stores now.
