Marvel Comics Announces New Gwen Stacy Series SPIDER-GWEN: ON TOUR
Gwen Stacy is getting a new limited series at Marvel Comics titled Spider-Gwen: On Tour. The four-issue comic will center on Stacy and her band, The Mary Janes.
The comic was announced at the Women of Marvel panel at San Diego Comic-Con, and the comic is coming from writer Melissa Flores and artist Enid Balám. As a long-time fan of Spider-Gwen, I’m always excited to see a new story told for her!
In Spider-Gwen: On Tour #1: “TIME TO FACE THE MUSIC! The Mary Janes are off on a four-city tour as the opening act to one of Earth-65’s biggest rock bands! Gwen has promised the band that this big break will be all about the music. No web-slinging, just drums. But when a mysterious assassin targets the headliner, Gwen begins to wonder how she got this gig in the first place. Featuring new versions of some of your favorite characters!”
For those of you not familiar with The Mary Janes in the comics, they are a renowned girl band that was established in 1983. They gained popularity for their hit tracks like “In My House”, “All Night Long”, “Candy Man”, and their unique rendition of “Walk Like a Man”. As mentees of Rick James, they had a run until 1987 when they disbanded. During the 1980s, they launched two albums and had a third one recorded but it remained unreleased for years. It was eventually made public in 2014, forming part of a comprehensive review of Rick James' contributions to music. The Mary Jane Girls received recognition for their impact in music when they were inducted into the Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame in 2019.
Spider-Gwen: On Tour #1 features covers by Elizabeth Torque and David Nakayama. The issue releases in December 2023.
