Marvel Comics Promises to "Break the Internet" with Their MARVEL LEGACY Relaunch

I've been reading Marvel Comics for the past ten or so years, and I've kept up to date on all the stuff that has gone on. The wars, the invasions, the deaths, and rebirths. Something that Marvel likes to say every now and then is that they're gonna break the internet with what they are doing.

What does this mean though? Like really? In my opinion, there has never been anything so massively crazy that everyone on the internet just smashed their computer or stopped browsing. The closest thing to breaking the internet I can think of is just bombarding message boards and reddit with discussions. So if that's what they mean, great. But even that wouldn't do it.

Marvel has just announced Marvel Legacy, a relaunch and rebranding of its comic book line that promises to return Marvel to what it once was. Making Iron Man alive, Thor worthy of his hammer, and Captain America not Hydrafied. A lot of stuff has happened in the Marvel Comics Universe, and this Legacy is meant to hopefully fix everything and put it back to the status quo.

In an interview with ABC News, Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso had this to say of Marvel Legacy:

"[Marvel Legacy issue] functions as a preview of what's to come. It's chocked full of twists, surprises, Easter eggs, and let's just say, a last-page reveal that's probably gonna break the internet. It's a big moment, something we continually get asked about. We are going to answer that question."

I love Marvel. I will always love Marvel. But if you've been reading them for the past ten years, or even earlier, you must know how hard it is to have your mind blown. In the past five years alone, I've seen Spider-man, Hulk, Captain America, Professor X, War Machine, Wolverine, and Cyclops die. Not to mention THE ENTIRE MARVEL UNIVERSE. Yeah, that happened. Everyone died and Doctor Doom put them all back together, then messed it all up and Mr. Fantastic put it all back together. But seriously, what can they do to blow minds? I already know they're bringing back a bunch of my favorites, which is great. I think they had a fun time experimenting and got a lot out of it, but it's good to get back to the basics. So what are they going to do to break the internet? There's a part of me worried about this because I'm scared it will be going too far. They could decide to do something crazy like Original Sin and while telling a great story mix up a bunch of tie-ins.

I honestly hope it's just a fresh start. Not like Ultimate Marvel, they could change the world and do something cool, (although Ultimate Marvel wouldn't be terrible). I like the idea of essentially playing with reality a bit like DC did. Set in an age for all the heroes and establish their continuity. There are so many weird things that happened in the past ten years alone, that it's hard to get new readers into it. So wipe it all. Keep the new characters. There's a lot of good ones there. Champions are rad and Jane Foster Thor is cool. I'm not against the new established world where the new and old exist simultaneously. Marvel can take a few of the events that they really think are necessary for characters and make them cannon. Everything else can get a fresh start. Tony Stark is a Billionaire Playboy; Captain America is a hero out of time; Peter Parker is a young adult trying to survive growing up mixed with Heroism.

Sometimes, to move forward, you have to start with a semi-clean slate. So if Marvel really wants to break the internet and wow us, then just start new and create your empire from the ground up again. They can bring as many people back from the dead as they want, but then make a rule that from here on out, anyone who dies will stay dead for at LEAST ten years. No clones, no time travel, no resurrection. Make death matter. That will really blow some minds.
