Marvel Exec Brad Winderbaum Gives Update on Status of BLACK PANTHER Okoye Spinoff Series
Black Panther character Okoye, played by Danai Gurira, is the former General of the female Wakandan army, Dora Milaje, and the head of Wakandan armed forces and intel. She’s a badass whose arc we have seen develop from the first film in 2018 through Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), What If…? Season 1 (2021), and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022).
In February 2021, as part of Black Panther director Ryan Coogler’s five-year overall exclusive television deal with Disney, an Okoye spin-off series was reported to be in development at Disney+/Marvel, but it turns out that series is no longer moving forward.
Speaking with Pay or Wait (via X) for the latest Marvel series Daredevil: Born Again, Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation, confirmed that the Okoye spin-off was no longer in development.
He stated, “I think fans of Okoye are going to be excited to see her come back, but I don’t think it’s going to be in a television show. I can’t say where and when, but I think there’s a lot to look forward to.”
Danai Gurira is set to reprise her role of Okoye in the upcoming four-part animated anthology series Eyes of Wakanda, which is headed to Disney+ in August, and hopefully we will see her return in Black Panther 3 as well. Stay tuned for updates.
