Marvel Had Planned to Make a WHAT IF...? Spin-Off Centered on Star-Lord T'Challa
Marvel and Disney+ have another successful series under their belt with the completion of Season 1 of What If…? gracing the streamer this week. The series was great, but episode 2 was made even more special for fans when they realized it was the final performance of Chadwick Boseman in the role of Black Panther. "What If... T'Challa Became a Star-Lord?" was an excellent episode, but before the loss of Boseman, Marvel had bigger plans for the crossover.
In a recent interview with Variety, the show’s creator, A.C. Bradley, and director, Bryan Andrews, chatted about what could have been, with Andrews saying that Boseman wrapped his Season 1 lines shortly before passing:
"I think he was also trying to make an effort, because T'Challa was so important to him. I don't know if [Chadwick] knew this, but there was planning to have Star-Lord T'Challa spin off into his own show with that universe and crew. We were all very excited. We know he would have loved it, too. And then, you know, he passed, and so all that's in limbo. So, who knows? Maybe one day."
Just another reason to miss the great Chadwick Boseman. He was the best Black Panther we could have asked for. And while I’m excited for whatever the second season of What If…? has in store, as well as the next phases of the MCU, it’s all a little bittersweet. But it’s all in his memory, and we are grateful for it.
