Marvel Insider Says Kevin Feige May Be Looking to Cast [Rumor] as Kang the Conqueror After Jonathan Majors Firing
A few weeks ago, Marvel fired actor Jonathan Majors from the future projects they had in mind for him, as the MCU was building toward his character Kang the Conqueror being their next big villain akin to Thanos. Majors had played the character in the Loki series, as well as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, where we saw a bit of his backstory. He would have gone on to star in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and probably some other titles between here and there, but now that he’s out of the picture, it has left us to wonder if the character would be recast, or if the MCU would pivot to another storyline.
A Marvel insider has given us an answer to that, but it’s all rumor for now, so take it with a grain of salt. ComicBook reports that according to insider Daniel Richtman, actor Colman Domingo is "one option" to replace Majors, but he stresses that it's very early days.
Domingo is a multi-award winning actor, writer and director, who has appeared in Fear the Walking Dead, Lincoln, Selma, If Beale Street Could Talk, and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. More recently, he garnered acclaim for playing the lead role in biographical drama, Rustin.
At 54, Domingo is quite a bit older than Majors, but as the Multiverse is full of different Kang Variants, recasting this role is actually simpler than others would be.
As for the next Avengers movie, it's believed that The Kang Dynasty subtitle has been dropped, and the project is being referred to internally as Avengers 5 for the time being. To what extent the current story will be altered remains to be seen, but Marvel revamping it as Secret Wars Part 1 is sounding more and more likely.
Insider Jeff Sneider has heard that "Secret Wars is basically shaping up to be a giant five-hour movie with a year-long intermission,” similarly to how Infinity War and Endgame played out. As we know, Loki writer Michael Waldron was hired to pen a new draft, but reports indicate that the events of Loki Season 2 are still going to inform the main plotline, which means Kang would remain on as a central character.
Richtman has also heard that, despite rumors to the contrary, Doctor Doom was never being positioned to replace Kang as the new big bad of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and would have (and may still be) a secondary villain of the next Avengers films.
This is obviously just a rumor for now, and if Domingo is a possibility to take over as Kang, I’m sure there are others in talks as well.
