Marvel President Kevin Feige Explains Why Spoilers Don't Always Ruin a Movie

This week, Deadpool & Wolverine is hitting theaters, and fans are stoked. We have been waiting a long time for this movie, the only MCU release of the year, and the one that seems like it will turn things around for the studio.

It has teased many surprises and characters, and it seems like we really could be in for anything with the film dipping its toes in the multiverse.

So fans feel pressed to see the movie quickly to avoid getting the surprises spoiled. But Marvel President Kevin Feige has a theory that spoilers don’t actually ruin a film.

He explained in a recent interview with ComingSoon: “That’s very hard [to keep secrets] and almost impossible nowadays. And I think I realized a long time ago that it’s great to keep secrets.

“And the only reason we want to keep secrets is to maintain surprises. So that an audience, that theater full of people, can discover things for the first time and have that adrenaline rush of a surprise for the first time.

“But what I have learned is if the moment works in the movie, and if you’ve earned it for the minute that once the lights go down in the theater, it’s a clean slate, and people have read things online or made predictions or read rumors, most of that goes away for most viewers when the lights go down, and they experience it fresh.

“And if the movie works, and if those moments work, they will. It’s probably always better if it’s a surprise, but they’ll work 99% as well if they’re well crafted into a cinematic moment. So that’s what makes me feel better when things are spoiled.”

I get what he means. I would still enjoy experiencing the movie in the theater even knowing some of the surprises, but I really feel like I will enjoy it more going in without knowing!

That’s why we bought tickets ahead of time, so we could see one of the first showings, surrounded by fans, seeing everything together for the first time, as intended.

I hope no one has the fun secrets of the film spoiled for them, and I hope it’s as great as we’ve all anticipated.
