Marvel Rebuilds the AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Trailer in LEGO, and It’s Surprisingly Revealing
Marvel Studios just gave Avengers: Doomsday a LEGO makeover, and somehow the tiny plastic version makes the movie’s visual style even more noticeable.
Marvel officially recreated the film’s first trailer in LEGO, rather than leaving the job to fans, and the result is impressively polished while still having some fun with the material.
It also highlights just how dark and muted Avengers: Doomsday looks, with the actual footage leaning heavily into browns, yellows, grays, and late-day lighting as Doctor Doom sets out to destroy the multiverse and the heroes caught in his path.
The LEGO trailer has to brighten several moments so we can actually see the minifigures, which makes scenes involving Sue Storm, Wakanda, and a massive wall of water look surprisingly different.
Other moments go the opposite direction, including Gambit’s brief fight with Shang-Chi, where the character is so hard to see you might wonder if someone forgot to give the poor LEGO guy a face.
The LEGO Avengers: Doomsday trailer is also a funny preview of some of the challenges Marvel faces with a movie this enormous. With such a massive cast, getting everyone together for practical scenes isn’t exactly easy, so audiences can probably expect plenty of cross-cutting and effects-heavy action, including sequences that take advantage of darker environments.
The bigger question is whether the movie’s subdued look will work for the story. Could the darker palette help sell the desperation of heroes facing Doctor Doom and the possible destruction of the multiverse? Could it also create a stronger visual contrast with Avengers: Secret Wars when that film arrives in 2027?
We’ll find out when Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18.
