Marvel Reportedly Recasting Gambit for MCU's X-MEN Reboot to Give Rogue an Age-Appropriate Romance
Channing Tatum finally got his chance to play Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, but it looks like Marvel Studios has different plans for the Cajun mutant in its upcoming X-Men reboot. A new report suggests the studio is looking to cast a younger Remy LeBeau, potentially bringing one of Marvel Comics' most popular romances to the big screen.
According to industry insider Caleb Williams, Marvel has reportedly been searching for a new Gambit actor since September. The character is expected to have a smaller role in the reboot, although Williams cautioned that his appearance isn't guaranteed.
If Gambit makes the cut, this will mark the character's third live-action incarnation. Taylor Kitsch first played him in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, while Tatum finally got to throw some explosive playing cards around in Deadpool & Wolverine after spending years trying to get his own Gambit movie made.
Tatum was a lot of fun in the role, but Marvel's decision to go younger makes sense, especially if the studio intends to explore Gambit's complicated romance with Rogue.
Inde Navarrette, 25, is playing Rogue in the reboot, joining a younger generation of mutants that includes Sadie Sink, 25, as Jean Grey, Kit Connor, 22, as Cyclops, and Maya Boyd, 23, as Storm.
Casting someone closer to Navarrette's age would give Marvel the opportunity to develop Rogue and Gambit's relationship naturally across multiple movies.
Rogue and Gambit have one of the most memorable relationships in X-Men comics. Their romance was a major part of X-Men: The Animated Series and continued in X-Men '97, where their emotional history remained an important part of the story.
In the comics, the two eventually got married after years of breaking up, getting back together, and dealing with all the complications that come with being mutants.
That relationship has never been explored in the live-action movies. Anna Paquin played Rogue in Fox's original X-Men franchise, where her romantic storyline involved Bobby Drake, aka Iceman, played by Shawn Ashmore. Kitsch's Gambit never even crossed paths with her.
The MCU now has a chance to give fans the Rogue and Gambit romance they've been waiting for, complete with Remy's Cajun charm, questionable decisions, and his determination to win over a woman whose powers make physical intimacy incredibly difficult.
There's also a potentially interesting story connection between Gambit and the reboot's villain, Mister Sinister, who will reportedly be played by Adam Driver.
In Marvel Comics, Gambit once worked for Sinister and helped assemble the Marauders, a group of mutant assassins responsible for slaughtering the Morlocks during the infamous Mutant Massacre storyline. It's one of the darker chapters of Gambit's history, and something that could make for a compelling storyline in the MCU.
Storm also has strong connections to the Morlocks, which makes her inclusion another interesting piece of the puzzle. With Boyd already training for the role, Marvel could potentially pull elements from the Mutant Massacre storyline while introducing Gambit's troubled past.
Of course, that's speculation for now, but there are some great stories Marvel could explore if it decides to connect these characters.
The new X-Men movie is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2028, with Thunderbolts director Jake Schreier helming the project.
There's still no confirmation that Gambit will appear in the film, and it's possible Marvel could save his proper introduction for a sequel. Either way, recasting the character with a younger actor gives the studio room to develop his relationship with Rogue over time.
As much as I enjoyed Tatum's Gambit, I'd love to see Marvel finally bring Remy and Rogue's romance to life in a way that does justice to their comic book story arc.
