Marvel Studios is Developing a WHAT IF Animated Series For Disney+!

Thanks to /Film, we’ve learned about some big plans for a new series that Marvel Studios is developing for Disney+. According to the news outlet, they are producing an animated show that is based on the popular What If comic book series.

The animated show will be an anthology series and it will be overseen by MCU master builder Kevin Feige. Feige oversaw many of the early animated projects for Marvel with The Invincible Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Hulk Vs. and others, so this isn’t his first time working with Marvel animation.

It’s explained that the stories told in this series will not be canon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series will tell stories that “explore how the Marvel Cinematic Universe might have unfolded if key moments in its history had not occurred as they did in recognized canon. For example, one of the episodes will adapt What If? Vol. #47, which explored the idea of ‘What if Loki had found the hammer of Thor?’”

One of the things that they are hoping to do, is bring on the actors from the live-action Marvel films to reprise their roles for the animated series, “which would imagine alternate possibilities from another dimension.” With this being an anthology series, each episode will be focusing on a completely different story filled with different characters.

This show has potential to be incredibly fun! Marvel animation has been pretty lackluster in the past few years, but if Feige brings back the creative team of those earlier Marvel animated film productions, maybe this new What If series could end up being great! The fact that Feige is overseeing this series gives me confidence in this show.

What do you think about Marvel Studios developing an animated What If anthology series? Are there any What If stories that you’d like to see brought to life?
