Marvel Studios Is Trying to Get the Russo Bros. to Return for Another Film, But It's Not Going Well
Joe and Anthony Russo are responsible for four Marvel movies in the MCU, including the two that wrapped up the Infinity Saga, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The brother directors said at the time of Endgame (2019) that it was their final Marvel outing “for now,” not ruling out a return to the MCU in the future. But nothing had been stirring about their next project, until now.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the Russos were approached to talk about a new Marvel project, but a wrench was thrown in the discussion after the recent legal throwdown between Marvel (Disney) and Scarlett Johansson.
This battle made the Russos feel unsure about working with the company that was not clear about its distributional intentions when Black Widow was supposed to hit theaters only, and ended up both on big screens and streaming in homes on the same day.
The report says that Joe and Anthony Russo “hit an impasse” in negotiations to direct another Marvel movie, as they became “unsure” about how this project would be distributed and how much they would be paid. The outlet also noted that the outcome of Johansson’s lawsuit could “help set new compensation benchmarks for digital releases” at Disney.
So we are far off from getting the real news, as lots of internal negotiations still have to happen. But that doesn’t stop us from speculating about what project it is that Marvel wants these heavy-hitter directors back for.
After making the two epic Avengers finale films, they probably wouldn’t call them in for a single character story. It feels like it would be something pretty large in scale, and it feels like we have a lot to work with, considering the talk of a Secret Wars movie, or maybe a brand new X-Men or Fantastic Four? A Deadpool crossover? What could it be? What would you like to see the Russos bring to the big screen?
