Marvel Studios Rumored to Be Eyeing Former SGT. ROCK Director Luca Guadagnino to Helm Future MCU Project
Marvel Studios has developed a reputation for taking chances on filmmakers who aren't the obvious pick for superhero movies, and if a new rumor turns out to be true, that trend could continue with another acclaimed director.
According to insider @MyTimeToShineH, Marvel Studios is interested in bringing Luca Guadagnino into the MCU to direct a future project. There aren't any details about which movie he might be attached to, and nothing has been officially confirmed by either Marvel Studios or Guadagnino, so this should be treated as a rumor for now.
Guadagnino has earned praise throughout his career for character-driven films including Call Me by Your Name, Suspiria, Bones and All, Challengers, and After the Hunt. While those movies are a far cry from comic book blockbusters, this wouldn't actually be his first brush with the superhero genre.
The filmmaker had previously signed on to direct Sgt. Rock for DC Studios, with Colin Farrell reportedly lined up to play the iconic World War II soldier.
The project spent months in development before falling apart. Early reports pointed to scheduling conflicts and production concerns tied to weather conditions, but it was later reported that Guadagnino's exit stemmed from a creative clash with DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn.
Now that Sgt. Rock is no longer on his schedule, it appears Marvel Studios may be looking to bring him into its own cinematic universe instead.
It certainly wouldn't be the first time Marvel has recruited an unexpected filmmaker. Chloé Zhao brought her Oscar-winning style to Eternals, while Ryan Coogler delivered one of the MCU's most celebrated films with Black Panther.
More recently, Jake Schreier impressed audiences with Thunderbolts* and has since landed the highly anticipated X-Men reboot.
The bigger question is whether Guadagnino would be interested in working within Marvel's filmmaking process. His career has been built on intimate, filmmaker-driven stories with a distinctive artistic identity.
The MCU operates very differently, with Marvel Studios often taking a larger role in certain aspects of production, including action sequences.
Still, Marvel seems to be putting a stronger emphasis on quality as it shapes the future of the franchise, and bringing in another highly respected filmmaker could be another step in that direction.
Kevin Feige has shown a willingness to seek out directors with unique creative perspectives, especially as the MCU moves toward what many fans expect will become the Mutant Saga.
As for which Marvel property would be the best fit for Guadagnino, there are plenty of possibilities. His strengths as a storyteller could make him an unexpected but fascinating choice for a character-driven Marvel film that leans more into emotion and relationships than spectacle.
For now, we'll have to wait and see if this rumor leads anywhere. If it does, Guadagnino could become one of the most interesting directors to join the MCU.
