Marvel TV Boss Agrees WHAT IF…? Should Have Shown What Happened If the Other Avengers Were Snapped

Marvel’s animated series What If…? gave fans a wild tour through alternate MCU timelines, flipping iconic moments in ways that ranged from fun to chaotic. But even with all those possibilities explored, there’s one scenario that still feels like a massive missed opportunity and now a top Marvel TV executive is saying the same thing.

During an appearance on The Escape Pod, Brad Winderbaum was asked to weigh in on a fan-favorite idea: What if the Blip had taken out the other half of the Avengers instead? His answer was simple and direct. “Yeah, you guys are 100% right on that.”

That one comment has reignited a debate that’s been floating around the fandom ever since Avengers: Endgame wrapped up the Infinity Saga.

In the version we got, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes like Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America survived Avengers: Infinity War, while characters like Spider-Man, Black Panther, and the Guardians of the Galaxy were wiped out. That lineup ultimately led to the time heist and the universe-saving snap in Endgame.

Flip that scenario, though, and everything changes.

Imagine a world where Tony Stark and Steve Rogers turn to dust, leaving Peter Parker, T’Challa, Doctor Strange, and the Guardians to pick up the pieces. It’s a totally different team dynamic, with different strengths and potentially a completely different path to undoing Thanos’ damage.

Fans have gone deep on this idea, and the theories are all over the place. One person on Reddit argued:

“I feel like they would've solved things faster. Hank and Janet together would've probably figured out time travel through Janet's knowledge of the place and Hank's genius. T'Challa would've provided additional help through Wakandan tech. More importantly, Strange would've seen this future play out from the millions he viewed and would know what to do.”

Not everyone agrees it would have gone smoothly, though. One fan added: “The only reason they knew that time travel was a possibility was because Scott accidentally time travelled when he was stuck in the quantum realm. Since Scott is gone, that doesn't happen.”

Others take an even darker view of how things might have played out. someone said: “The story would have to end with them losing, because out of the millions of scenarios [Strange] saw the only one where they won was what happened in Endgame, so that would have been cool too.”

And then there are fans who think this alternate lineup could have been even more efficient than the original team. “It would be so cool. Honestly I think between Fury, Pym and Strange they would have reversed things even quicker.”

Some even believe the idea is so massive it could have carried more than just a single episode. Another fan said: “That kind of what-if has enough content to make its own separate season. Or an entire separate MCU franchise lol.”

This isn’t just a simple role reversal, it completely reshapes the emotional core, the strategy, and even the outcome of the Infinity Saga. Seeing how different personalities like Doctor Strange and Black Panther would handle the aftermath of the Blip could have pushed What If…? into even more unexpected territory.

With What If…? wrapping up after its third season, it looks like that particular story might stay in the realm of imagination for now. Still, Marvel isn’t done exploring animated corners of the universe, with Marvel Zombies continuing to expand that side of the MCU and a second season already in development.

And on the live-action side, the next big chapter arrives with Spider-Man: Brand New Day swinging into theaters on July 31.
