MARVEL ZOMBIES Season 2 Is Being Planned by Marvel Studios, but It Depends on the Fans
Marvel Studios is already looking ahead at the undead future of the MCU. Even before the first season of Marvel Zombies hits Disney+, the studio has confirmed that a second season is being considered. But, its fate rests entirely on how many fans show up for the first batch of episodes.
The zombie outbreak in the MCU began back in What If...? when the episode “What If... Zombies?!” gave us a glimpse into a twisted reality where Earth was overrun by the undead.
The fan response to that episode led Marvel Television to greenlight a full spin-off. Now Marvel Zombies arrives next week as a four-episode event, and a potential Season 2 is already on the table, if audiences make it worth Marvel’s while.
Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Television and Animation, laid it out plainly in a new interview:
"Please, like, people have got to subscribe to Disney+ and watch this show. If that happens, they will get more. And we are excited. We’re ready."
As for where things could go if the series continues, Winderbaum pointed to the comics as inspiration while also acknowledging how much creative freedom the team had in shaping the show.
"We had a lot of freedom, you know, in development in terms of characters we could use or where we wanted to explore. But there were certain lore considerations."
He also explained how the animated series builds on Marvel’s long comic history, especially the work of Robert Kirkman, Sean Phillips, and Mark Millar.
"What Robert [Kirkman] and Sean [Phillips] did in that original book, it kind of branched off from what Mark Millar was doing. It was just a different time in the comics, a different universe.
“We were branching off of 616, sorry, of the MCU version of 616. The pieces on the board were in different places for us to start the story."
And if Marvel Zombies does get a second season, it sounds like the team already has big ideas in mind.
"That lore is very rich and expansive, and Bryan [Andrews] and I nerd out all the time about other characters and other things that are happening in the universe at the same time, and where we would explore if we were so lucky to make a second season."
Marvel Studios has scored major wins with X-Men ’97 and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, but some fans feel that the What If...? concept has already run its course. Marvel Zombies definitely looks like a bloody fun ride, but whether it deserves more than one season will come down to how fans respond.
At the end of the day, it seems Marvel will only commit to additional seasons if the viewership justifies it. With marketing for the show kicking in so close to its premiere and zombies not quite as trendy as they once were, the question is whether fans will rally behind it.
If they do, the undead could have a long life at Marvel Studios. If not, Marvel Zombies might just be a one-season apocalypse.
