Marvel's BLACK WIDOW Movie Will Be Directed By Cate Shortland
Marvel Studios has officially hired a director to helm their Black Widow solo film. That director is Cate Shortland, who is an Australian director best known for the Nazi drama Lore and thriller Berlin Syndrome.
The only film that I've seen from the filmmaker is Berlin Syndrome which was a great movie! Her work on that give me confidence that she will deliver an intense action-packed Black Widow film.
There were a lot of directors in the running for this job and if Marvel Studios is confident in her abilities to tell this story, then why wouldn't I trust them. They constantly deliver great films that are made by talented filmmakers. According to THR, the studio met with over 70 directors for the job, mostly female.
The director runner-ups included Amma Asante (Belle, A United Kingdom), Maggie Betts (Novitiate), Melanie Laurent (Galveston) and Kimberly Pierce (Boys Don't Cry). Out of those choices, from what I know of their work, Shortland is the best choice.
Shortland doesn't even have agency representation, but Scarlett Johansson pushed hard for her to get the gig. According to the report the actress Shortland’s handling of the female lead in Lore.
Jac Schaeffer wrote the most recent draft for the film. Here are the trailers for Lore and Berlin Syndrome to give you a little taste of Shortland's style.
