Marvel's ETERNALS Will Explore The Time Before Thanos or Anyone Was Born
I don’t know about you, but I’m stoked for Marvel’s Eternals! One of the things that I’ve been wanting to see from the movie is the history of the Celestials and Eternals, something that will take us back to the beginning of time in the MCU. This is the movie that can give us that and according to director Chloé Zhao, it sounds like that’s exactly what we’re going to get! In an interview with Total Film, she says:
"What excited me is the idea of going back in time, and exploring [the time] before Thanos was born, before anyone was born. Where does the MCU go back in time? And that brings us to the mythology of the Celestials. Anything involving the Celestials is going to be at a huge scale level of complication, let's put it that way."
Do you remember how Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings started, and how it gave us that epic history of the One Ring? I’m hoping that the opening of Eternals gives us an opening sequence that is more epic than that! It certainly has the potential to blow people’s minds, with the history of the Celestials, Eternals, and Deviants. I have this insane vision of it in my head and I hope that I get to see that in this movie!
The director went on to discuss the mission of the Eternals and the reason why they weren’t able to interfere with some of the other big events that took place in the MCU:
"[The audience] will understand why. Not only why, but how complicated not interfering made them feel. We explore that. You'll see that in the film. The Eternals were instructed not to interfere with any human conflict unless Deviants are involved. There's a reason why that's the case. And that was the instruction from the prime Celestial Arishem."
I love reading interviews like this because they get me even more pumped up about the movie! The story for the film follows a group of heroes from beyond the stars who have protected the Earth since the dawn of man. When monstrous creatures called the Deviants, long thought lost to history, mysteriously return, the Eternals are forced to reunite in order to defend humanity once again.
The cast for the film includes Gemma Chan as humankind-loving Sersi, Richard Madden as the all-powerful Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as cosmic-powered Kingo, Lia McHugh as the eternally young, old-soul Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as the intelligent inventor Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as the super-fast Makkari, Barry Keoghan as aloof loner Druig, Don Lee as the powerful Gilgamesh, with Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, with Salma Hayek as the wise and spiritual leader Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as the fierce warrior Thena.
Eternals hits theaters on November 5, 2021.
