Marvel's SHANG-CHI Breaks Labor Day Weekend Box Office Record with $83.5 Million
There’s been a lot riding on the theatrical release of Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings. With the ongoing pandemic, the major studios have been wondering if audiences would show up to theaters to watch a big-budget highly-anticipated film like Shang-Chi.
Well, the answer is clear… hell yes, they will! The movie became second the biggest debut of the pandemic year so far, behind fellow Marvel Studios pic Black Widow. The film pulled in $71.4 million domestically over the weekend, and it’s on track to make $83.5 million over the four-day Labor Day weekend. This smashes the previous Labor Day weekend record of $30.6 which was held by Rob Zombie’s 2007 movie Halloween. Shang-Chi also pulled in $139.7 million worldwide.
The movie made about $8 million on IMAX screens in U.S. and Canada, and Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX, said in a statement:
“Shattering Labor Day box office records with an origin story new to many fans, Shang-Chi delivers an emphatic statement: people really want to get back to the movies. It’s clear that great filmmaking plus an exclusive theatrical release is a winning formula at the box office, and this groundbreaking film has successfully launched an exciting new cinematic journey for Marvel and a strong fall blockbuster slate for the industry.”
Shang-Chi will have an exclusive 45-day theatrical release and after that, it will be made available on Disney+. It’s great to see the movie succeed like this, and it means that we probably won’t see many other movie release dates get pushed back.
Shang-Chi proves that people want to get back to the theaters and watch movies. I’ve always loved watching movies at the theaters, so it makes me happy to see that movie fans are ready to get back and be entertained!
