Marvel's WHAT IF...? Producer Says There Are Multiple Marvel Animated Projects in Development
Marvel Studios launched their first animated MCU series this week with What If…? and it looks like Marvel fans are happy with the outcome. It was a great first episode, and I can’t help but think things are going to get better from here.
A few weeks ago we learned that Marvel was setting up a mini-studio to focus on more animated projects with Marvel Studios executive VP of film production, Victoria Alonso saying, “We have so much coming your way that you might tell us, ‘Okay, take a break now!'”
Now, in a recent interview with Variety, What If...?, series producer Brad Winderbaum shared that Marvel already has "multiple" animated projects in "various phases of development" for Disney+. He explained:
“We realized that there’s a lot of cool avenues you can explore with animation. Any project that we create is going to be something that needs to be animated in order for the story to be told. There’s very little desire to take a piece of IP that’s popular because we’re coming out with a movie and just make an animated show about it. We’re not going to do that.”
There’s a lot of stuff coming in the What If…? series that would have been a lot more difficult to pull off in live-action. Telling these multiverse stories is perfect for the animation medium, and I’m curious to see what these other animated projects that are being developed end up being. There are just so many different stories and opportunities and I love that they are going to experiment with it and try new and different things. They might as well because there are limitless opportunities with animation!
