Marvel’s X-MEN May Have Found Its Professor X in Christopher Abbott

Marvel Studios may be getting ready to fully pull back the curtain on its X-Men reboot, and with D23 Expo only a week away, some interesting new casting details have surfaced.

The biggest involves Professor Charles Xavier, with Christopher Abbott reportedly testing for the role and potentially emerging as the latest frontrunner.

We’ve also learned more about Marvel’s search for Cyclops, including a test from Asa Germann, while the mystery surrounding Adam Driver and his possible villain role continues to get more interesting.

According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision newsletter, there’s growing industry talk that Kevin Feige is preparing a major announcement for D23, and the expectation is that mutants will be involved.

Marvel could reveal the cast, official title, release date, or some combination of the three.

So far, Sadie Sink is the only officially confirmed member of the X-Men cast. She’ll reprise her Spider-Man: Brand New Day role as Jean Grey in the film, which is being directed by Jake Schreier.

Marvel hasn’t confirmed the rest of the team, but recent trade reports have reported that Samara Weaving playing Emma Frost and Kit Connor taking on Scott Summers, a.k.a. Cyclops.

Marvel has reportedly spent months screen-testing actors for several of the movie’s major characters, and Cyclops was obviously an important one to get right.

While Connor appears to have landed the role, THR reports that Germann, known for Gen V and The Boys, also tested to play Scott Summers.

That’s Asa Germann, by the way, not Asa Butterfield, whose name had previously been floating around online.

Germann didn’t get Cyclops, but the report leaves open the possibility that Marvel may have offered him another role in X-Men.

There’s no confirmation on that front, so for now, we’ll have to wait and see whether Germann still finds his way into the MCU’s mutant roster.

Cooper Hoffman was also reportedly someone Marvel had been interested in at one stage, but scheduling issues prevented those discussions from progressing.

Then there’s Professor X. Charles Xavier will presumably be the one responsible for bringing this new generation of mutants together, and several actors have already been connected to the role.

Bill Skarsgård and Tom Pelphrey have been among the names rumored in recent weeks, though things appear to have shifted.

There hasn’t been much of an update regarding Skarsgård, while THR says Pelphrey did screen-test for Xavier but didn’t get the role.

Now Abbott has entered the picture. The Tony Award-nominated actor, whose recent credits include Kraven the Hunter and Wolf Man, reportedly tested for Charles Xavier.

Marvel has since stopped responding to additional questions about its X-Men casting process, so Abbott’s current status hasn’t been confirmed. Still, based on the latest information, he could be the guy currently leading the Professor X conversation.

Abbott would certainly be an interesting choice. He’s 40 years old, which would give Marvel plenty of room to build around his Xavier for years without necessarily repeating the older, established version of the character audiences already know from previous X-Men movies.

Of course, another major casting mystery remains with Adam Driver.

Driver has long been rumored for the movie’s primary villain, but exactly who he might play has been all over the map. Magneto, Mister Sinister, William Stryker, and Donald Pierce have all been mentioned as possibilities.

THR has now added another intriguing name to the mix: Sebastian Shaw.

The Hellfire Club leader would offer Marvel a very different kind of antagonist for its first MCU X-Men adventure.

Magneto or Mister Sinister still feel like strong possibilities, though, especially considering how important both characters are to the larger mutant mythology.

There are also two other casting rumors that haven’t received an official update. Charles Melton has been heavily linked to Beast, while Cailee Spaeny has been rumored to play Rogue. Neither actor’s involvement has been confirmed by Marvel.

At this point, Marvel appears to be keeping everything locked down ahead of D23. That makes it unlikely we’ll get much concrete information about the X-Men cast before Feige takes the stage.

If the reports about a major mutant announcement are accurate, though, we could finally be days away from meeting the MCU’s first full-fledged X-Men team.

After years of speculation about how Marvel Studios plans to reboot these characters, it’ll be pretty damn exciting to finally put some faces to the characters.
