Marvel's ZODIAC Reportedly a Dark Political Spy Thriller in the Vein of THE AMERICANS

Marvel Studios is heading into some darker territory with its mysterious new Disney+ series, Zodiac, and the latest details suggest we're getting a gritty British spy thriller with some interesting connections to the MCU's past.

Marvel Television announced Zodiac during New York Comic Con last week, but the studio has been keeping the details under wraps. Now, a new report offers our first look at the show's three central characters and the kind of story Marvel is planning to tell.

According to Knight Edge Media, Zodiac is being developed as a "dark British spy thriller," with Marvel preparing to cast three British leads, two men and one woman.

Interestingly, none of these characters are expected to be established Marvel Comics heroes or villains. "These leads are not expected to have comic book counterparts and are totally original."

The report also claims that Zodiac will be a "lot grittier" than the James Bond or Mission: Impossible movies, with FX's acclaimed espionage drama The Americans being used as a comparison.

That could make for a pretty cool change of pace for Marvel. Rather than another superhero adventure, it sounds like the studio is developing a more grounded story involving espionage, political intrigue, and dangerous intelligence operations.

Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Television's head of television, animation, and comic books, previously confirmed that filming will begin in London this spring, with casting expected to get underway soon. The series is currently targeting a 2028 premiere on Disney+.

Winderbaum also teased that Marvel fans might be able to figure out a few things by examining the show's mysterious logo. “If you’re a fan of the comics, there’s a lot hidden in that logo. That’s all you’re getting. It’s supposed to be a secret.”

One particularly interesting detail is the inclusion of part of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. insignia in the logo. That has fueled speculation that Zodiac could continue storylines from the canceled ABC series, potentially bringing some familiar characters back into the MCU.

One popular theory is that Zodiac could be a new intelligence organization operating in the MCU, possibly emerging from what's left of S.H.I.E.L.D.

There's also speculation that the series could introduce MI-13, Marvel's British intelligence organization that has connections to characters such as Captain Britain, Blade, and the Black Knight.

Neither possibility has been confirmed, but a British political thriller involving secret organizations and Marvel's espionage history could be an interesting direction for the franchise.

Winderbaum has previously discussed the possibility of bringing Marvel's older television projects into the MCU's established continuity, specifically addressing Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter.

"Well, I'll tell you this, and put it to you like this. It's exciting for me to think about how to square those ABC shows with the canon. That, to me, if you know me and the way my brain works, that is fun territory to imagine."

It's also worth noting that Zodiac is the first new Marvel Television project announced since the studio canceled Wonder Man after its first season, despite previously renewing it. Marvel also recently confirmed that Daredevil: Born Again will conclude with its upcoming third season.

With those changes happening across Marvel's television lineup, Zodiac could represent a different approach to storytelling for the studio, especially if it leans into the political thriller elements being reported.

I'm definitely interested in seeing Marvel tackle something closer to The Americans, particularly if it finds a way to reconnect with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. without relying entirely on returning characters.
