Mary Elizabeth Winstead Comments on BIRDS OF PREY, Calling It 'Funny, Weird, and '90s in the Best Way'

Fans haven’t been given much yet in the way of info or any first looks at Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), so the verdict is still out as to how it will turn out. The first Suicide Squad movie didn’t go over so well with fans, so it’s interesting that we are getting a spin-off and a reboot of sorts, but it’s cool they didn’t just let all the material and characters die. I’m excited to see how each of the upcoming movies turn out.

In a recent interview with the New York Times, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who will play Huntress in the upcoming Birds of Prey film, talked a bit about her upcoming roles. When asked about whether or not she got to hang from a helicopter in the upcoming action-thriller Gemini Man, Winstead had this to say:

No, but I do a lot of running around and I get to fight some people. I had to train in jiu jitsu, do a little tactical gun training — there’s some shootouts. “Birds of Prey” was the next level up. In “Gemini Man” I’m a D.I.A. [Defense Intelligence Agency] agent who’s been hired to keep an eye on Will Smith, but in “Birds of Prey” I play this assassin who’s been trained since childhood. It’s all women and genuinely funny and weird. It feels from the ’90s, in the best way.

If she had to do Jiu-Jitsu and gun training for that role, but Birds of Prey was “next level up,” that sounds like the action we will see in Birds of Prey will be pretty dang epic! I love watching a badass lady assassin. And I love that she said it will be funny and have a ‘90s feel. I don’t know how the modern-set film will go about accomplishing a ‘90s feel, but I’m on board.

Are you excited for this movie? Birds of Prey hits theaters on February 7, 2020.
