Mary Elizabeth Winstead Opens Up About Playing Huntress in BIRDS OF PREY
We recently learned that Mary Elizabeth Winstead was cast in the role of Helena Bertinelli a.k.a. Huntress in DC’s Birds of Prey. A lot of fans were very happy with the casting choice! Winstead is an incredibly talented actress and there’s no doubt that she’s going to be awesome in the role.
She recently talked to The Wrap about taking on the role and explains that she is going to start her training soon. She says she’ll be learning how to shoot a bow and arrow, which is going to be a new experience for her. It’s certainly going to be fun to watch her kick some ass in the movie!
Winstead went on to reveal that she never really read a lot of comics growing up, but was drawn to the character after meeting with director Cathy Yan. She seemed to like strong and emotional take on the character. Winstead explains:
“I can’t say that I was a huge comic book reader. But when I met with Cathy Yan, who’s directing the film, and learned kind of the back story of the character, I was really interested. It’s a really strong, kind of emotional place to start from for a superhero character. I won’t go into too much detail now, but I think it’s interesting and an opportunity to do something cool with this kind of character."
If you’re not familiar with Huntress, in the comics, “Helena is the daughter of one of Gotham's mafia bosses, who turns to a life of vigilantism after her family is murdered. She soon joined forces with Batgirl and Black Canary, with the three of them being seen as the main trifecta of the Birds of Prey. While Helena is occasionally seen as a little impulsive and violent, she has proved to be a hero on many occasions.”
The actress goes on to talk about how the process of landing this role was different from anything she’s gone through before:
“It’s really exciting, and even the process of going through getting the role and everything was a very different experience than I’ve typically been through. Being with the other actresses and a female director and just the whole energy behind this is so unique, so I’m really happy about that.”
Winstead joins Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Dinah Lance/Black Canary and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie). They still have yet to cast Renee Montoya and Cassandra Cain a.k.a. Batgirl. They will team up take down the big bad mob boss Black Mask.
