Mary Elizabeth Winstead Says DC's BIRDS OF PREY is Wild, Totally Unique, and Unlike Anything in this Genre
It doesn’t seem like a lot of fans are excited about director Cathy Yan’s DC film Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). It makes sense that fans would feel this way because they’ve been burned by DC several times already. A lot of them also weren’t very fond of the Suicide Squad movie.
Well, Mary Elizabeth Winstead has some thoughts on the upcoming film that she shared, saying that it’s wild, unique, and different from anything else she’s seen in this genre. Winstead tends to be a part of strong projects that tell great stories, so I’m hoping that this ends up being that kind of film.
While talking to Total Film (Games Radar), she said, “You can expect something really fun and a bit wild and totally unique. Every day we were there, we were doing something that just felt really weird and unlike anything else I've seen before in this genre. It was incredibly exciting to get to do that. We really got to work. We just played, and we had fun.”
Birds of Prey’s screenwriter, Christina Hodson (Bumblebee) added, “It’s not a traditional team-up. So then it was about finding fun, inventive ways of doing that. Warners were very supportive in terms of letting me go off-leash.”
There’s a lot of wonderfully talented and creative people working on this movie I really do hope that the film ends up surpassing expectations, but even if it doesn’t, I’m sure it will at least end up being better than Suicide Squad.
Winstead plays Huntress in the film and she is joined by Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn; Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary; Rosie Perez as Detective Renee Montoya; Ella Jay Basco as Batgirl Cassandra Cain; Ewan McGregor as the villainous Black Mask; and Chris Messina as the serial killer, Victor Zsasz.
Four years after the events of Suicide Squad, Batman has disappeared, leaving Gotham City unprotected from crime, and Harley Quinn has left the Joker. When Cassandra Cain, a young girl, comes across a diamond belonging to crime lord Black Mask, Harley joins forces with Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to help protect her.
Birds of Prey is set to be released on February 7th, 2020.
