MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE Finds New Life on Streaming After Box Office Stumble, and It Deserves It
Sometimes a movie just needs a second chance, and that's exactly what's happening with Masters of the Universe. After failing to make much of an impact during its theatrical run, the fantasy adventure has found a much bigger audience on Amazon Prime Video, climbing all the way to the top of the streaming service's movie charts.
It's honestly great to see because this movie was a blast. It delivered the kind of larger-than-life fantasy adventure that Masters of the Universe fans have been waiting to see, and it's one of those films that really benefited from the theatrical experience.
The action, the world-building, the creatures, and the sheer scale of Eternia were made for the biggest screen possible. Unfortunately, a lot of audiences passed on that experience.
According to FlixPatrol, Masters of the Universe claimed the No. 1 spot on Amazon Prime Video's Top 10 Movies chart in the United States on July 24, 2026. It also climbed to the top of the platform's overall rankings, outperforming several popular titles including Moonfall, Project Hail Mary, Ruthless, The Sheep Detectives, The Amateur, and World War Z.
That's a pretty satisfying turnaround for a movie that deserved a better fate in theaters.
The story follows Prince Adam, who has spent most of his life on Earth after being hidden away as a child to escape Skeletor.
Everything changes when the legendary Sword of Power leads him back to Eternia, where he discovers the once-great kingdom has fallen under Skeletor's rule.
Reuniting with Teela, Duncan, and the remaining defenders of Eternia, Adam must finally embrace his destiny and become He-Man to save his home.
The cast includes Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam and He-Man, Camila Mendes as Teela, Idris Elba as Duncan, also known as Man-At-Arms, Jared Leto as Skeletor, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, and James Purefoy as King Randor.
While critics were generally positive, audiences were even more enthusiastic. Masters of the Universe currently holds a 67% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 251 reviews, while fans gave it an impressive 86% audience score.
That audience rating feels much closer to the experience of actually watching the film. It's an entertaining fantasy epic that embraces its source material and delivers plenty of exciting moments along the way.
Sadly, those positive reactions didn't translate into ticket sales. Masters of the Universe earned approximately $113.5 million worldwide against a reported $170 million production budget. That included around $64.7 million domestically and roughly $48.7 million internationally, making it one of the summer's bigger box office disappointments.
Thankfully, streaming is giving the film another shot. It's always nice to see a movie connect with viewers after theaters, especially one that's this much fun. Hopefully, people who skipped it on the big screen decide to give it a chance now because they're in for a really entertaining ride.
I still think audiences missed out by not experiencing Masters of the Universe in theaters. This is the kind of movie that thrives with a crowd, Even so, it's awesome to see the film finally getting the attention it deserves, even if it's happening from people's living rooms.
