Matt & Ross Duffer Talk About Sound Effect Theory in STRANGER THINGS Finale and Jokingly Tease a 20th Anniversary Reveal

The Duffer Brothers made a fan-favorite series with Stranger Things, launching Netflix’s original storytelling into another realm.

While the fifth and final season divided some viewers, many were happy with the ambiguity of the finale, which left hope for the character Eleven, who had previously been thought dead.

But some fans reached further beyond the ambiguous, and read into a sound effect that they believed was a nod to Eleven’s survival.

In an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Matt Duffer explained what the sound effect was we heard when the bridge is about to collapse, and the timeline jumps forward 18 months.

"It's written in the script that it is supposed to sound like a heartbeat, but it's actually just like, what do you call it? The brick. It's just distorted, but yeah, you could interpret it as that. I mean, it was meant to be interpreted as that potentially."

When host Josh Horowitz asked the creators if they'll follow in The Soprano’s creator David Chase's cryptic finale footsteps, and reveal what really happened to Eleven 20 years after the finale, the Duffers jokingly agreed. Matt Duffer responded:

"I hope people still care. That would be great. And then I'll say everything. Yeah. Okay. At that point. Okay. 20 years from now. 20 years from now. That's right."

That would be pretty funny if they came back with a concrete ending all that time later. I’m sure original fans, and a couple new generations of fans will be around by then, eager to hear anything new.

All seasons of Stranger Things are available to watch on Netflix. Check out the whole interview below:
