Matt Damon Reflects on Being Offered Harvey Dent Role in THE DARK KNIGHT

Before Matt Damon found himself sailing into mythological adventure as Odysseus, he nearly stepped into Gotham City instead.

The actor has revealed that he was offered the role of Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight, but scheduling got in the way, leading him to pass on what would become one of the most celebrated superhero movies ever made.

During a recent appearance on Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused, Damon looked back on several famous projects he turned down over the years, including The Dark Knight. While the role eventually went to Aaron Eckhart, Damon confirmed that Harvey Dent was the character he had been offered.

Reflecting on the opportunity, Damon explained: “Well, Dark Knight was a small role that I was offered. It obviously wasn’t Chris or Heath’s part.”

When Horowitz asked if the role was Harvey Dent, Damon confirmed it and went on to explain how he viewed the part at the time:

“Sometimes you look at a role, and you’re like, ‘Ah, it’s good. It’s a good role in a great movie.’ I mean, I subsequently did a small role in one of Chris’ movies in Interstellar.”

According to Damon, the biggest factor wasn't a lack of interest. He was already committed to another project, and the production schedules conflicted, making it impossible for him to join Christopher Nolan's Batman sequel.

It's always fun to imagine what could've been. Eckhart ended up delivering a memorable performance as Gotham's idealistic district attorney whose tragic fall transformed him into Two-Face.

It's one of the defining character arcs in The Dark Knight, but it's interesting to think about how Damon might've approached the role had the timing worked out differently.

The conversation didn't stop there. Damon also reflected on several other massive opportunities he let slip by over the years. Among the projects he mentioned were Avatar, Brokeback Mountain, Dead Poets Society, Pearl Harbor, and others that have since become major milestones in Hollywood.

Of course, the Avatar story has become legendary. Damon famously turned down the chance to play Jake Sully, a decision that also meant walking away from a deal that included 10% of the film's box office earnings. Looking back on it now, he can at least laugh about what might be the biggest missed payday in movie history.

As Damon joked: “At this point I passed on the biggest payday in the history of [film], I mean accidentally, so I can never do worse financially.”

Hollywood is filled with stories of actors who almost landed iconic roles, and this is another fascinating addition to that list.
