Matt Damon Suits Up as a Red POWER RANGER in Wild New Set Photos For His Mystery Sci-Fi Movie
We have our first real look at Matt Damon in the Daniels’ mysterious new sci-fi movie, and yeah, those Power Rangers reports suddenly make a lot more sense.
Damon is teaming up with Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert for their first feature since Everything Everywhere All at Once, and the project has been kept under wraps by Universal. The untitled movie is currently filming under the working title Thasnagar, with plot details still officially being kept secret.
Now, photos from the Los Angeles set have offered our best clue yet about what the Daniels are cooking up.
The set photos obtained by TMZ show Damon wearing a bright red Power Ranger-style superhero costume. It's wonderfully goofy, and Damon is standing alongside other characters wearing blue, pink, and yellow versions of the costume.
If you’re familiar with Power Rangers, you know exactly where your brain goes when you see a color-coded team of heroes like this.
Previous reports claimed the film would draw inspiration from Power Rangers iconography, and these costumes certainly support that information. There also appears to be some classic Western superhero influence worked into the designs.
Even the working title could be having some fun with comic book history. Thasnagar sounds awfully close to Thanagar, the alien homeworld associated with DC Comics heroes Hawkman and Hawkgirl. Whether that's an intentional reference or simply a production codename remains unknown.
The film has previously been described as a “superhero tentpole with global warming as the villain,” but it will tell an original story with its own characters and mythology. There’s no official connection to the Power Rangers franchise.
The story reportedly takes place across two different timelines, jumping between the 1980s and the present day. The '80s portion will center on five young heroes.
Sandra Ohwill reportedly play Damon’s Jarvis-style AI assistant as an actual onscreen character The five younger leads are Sean Kaufman, Silvia Dionicio, Jackson Kelly, Kerrice Brooks, and Thalia Dudek, who are expected to become the primary heroes during the latter portion of the movie. Charles Melton, Michael Gandolfini, and PinkPantheress are also part of the cast.
Thasnagar is said to carry a budget north of $150 million, roughly six times what they had to make Everything Everywhere All at Once.
There's obviously still a ton we don't know about Thasnagar, including its actual title and how these costumed heroes fit into the larger story. But it’s interesting to see the Power Rangers influences!
The is currently scheduled to hit theaters on November 19, 2027.
