Matt Dillon Saddles Up to Lead and Executive Produce THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN Series at MGM+

Matt Dillon is set to headline and executive produce The Magnificent Seven for MGM+, an eight-episode drama that reimagines the legendary 1960 Western for a new generation.

This fresh take comes from Tim Kring, the creator of Heroes, and aims to deliver a cinematic Western experience built for prestige television. MGM+ has been leaning into projects with recognizable film DNA, and The Magnificent Seven fits into that plan.

Dillon will step into the boots of Chris Adams, the cool-headed leader of a band of seven gunslingers hired to defend a peaceful Quaker village. After the community is slaughtered by hired killers working for a ruthless land baron determined to take their land, Adams and his crew are brought in to protect what’s left.

Chris Adams is described as stoic and steady under pressure, with an unflinching gaze that says more than words ever could. He doesn’t tolerate hypocrisy or cruelty and lives by a personal moral code grounded in fairness and restraint.

That inner conflict is key to the story, especially when the group must wrestle with a powerful question: is violence acceptable to defend people whose faith is based on non-violence?

The role was famously played by Yul Brynner in the original 1960 film. Later, Denzel Washington portrayed a spiritual successor to the character in Antoine Fuqua’s 2016 remake. Now Dillon takes on the mantle, bringing his own edge and gravitas to the part.

Michael Wright, global head of MGM+, shared his excitement about the casting, saying: “Matt Dillon brings extraordinary depth and gravitas to this iconic role. His ability to portray complex, morally conflicted characters makes him the perfect choice to lead our reimagining of The Magnificent Seven.

“This series honors the legacy of the original film while exploring timeless themes about courage, redemption, and standing up against oppression—and Matt’s performance will be at the heart of that story.”

Set in the volatile 1880s American frontier, the series will explore the backstories of each of the Seven, digging into what drives them, what they’re risking, and why they accept this mission.

Themes of honor, sacrifice, redemption, morality, and faith are front and center. As the mercenaries settle into the village and prepare for an inevitable showdown, they’ll be forced to confront not only the enemy at their gates but their own pasts as well.

Kring writes the series and executive produces alongside Donald De Line, Lawrence Mirisch, Bruce Kaufman, and Dillon. MGM+ Studios and MGM Television Studios are producing, with production slated to begin in June 2026 in Calgary.

Dillon has been keeping busy. The Oscar nominee for Crash recently appeared in Apple TV+’s High Desert alongside Patricia Arquette. Up next, he’ll star in Claire Denis’ The Fence with Tom Blyth, which premiered at TIFF, and he’s set to play Frank Stallone in Amazon MGM Studios’ I Play Rocky, directed by Peter Farrelly.

Westerns always find a way back, and with Dillon leading the charge, this new version of The Magnificent Seven could end up being something pretty cool.
