Matt Reeves Discusses THE BATMAN Spinoff Series, Which Is Set "One Year" Before the Film
This weekend DC fans were treated with a badass first trailer for The Batman. Lots of fans flipped their shit over what the trailer showed off. This movie is sure to be a hit with fans, and there’s also a spinoff series coming set in the same universe that is coming to HBO Max.
During the DC FanDome presentation, director Matt Reeves talked about that series, which is set in the Gotham City police department. It’s explained that it “will build upon the film’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms. The series will extend the world established in the movie and further explore the myriad of complex characters of Gotham.”
Reeves explained that, "The idea for this story was Gotham [having] this depth of corruption and have a story... that goes into the inner workings of the city.” He also mentioned that the series will be set in Batman Year One when the “masked vigilante…starts to unsettle the city.” It will zero in on the city’s corruption that “goes back many years,” and the story will be told from the perspective of a crooked detective, who has a connection to the dark past of the city.
Reeves said, "The idea is we go back to Year One. Year One is the beginning, it's the first appearance of this masked vigilante that states to unsettle the city."
It’ll be interesting to see if Robert Pattinson’s Batman or Jeffrey Wright's Commissioner Gordon end up showing up in the series. If Batman’s involvement is limited and they plan to keep him in the shadows, they don’t have to bring Pattinson back, they just need someone to wear the costume.
I’m excited for the series. I have high hopes for this world that Reeves and his creative team are building around Batman.
