The Batman director Matt Reeves is teaming up with Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter to create an original DC drama for HBO Max that is set in the Gotham City police department.

The series will be written by Winter, and the story is set in the same Gotham City that we will see in Reeves’ The Batman. The show “will build upon the film’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms. The series will extend the world established in the movie and further explore the myriad of complex characters of Gotham.”

This was completely unexpected news, but extremely welcome and exciting! This marks the first project for Reeves under his recently announced major overall deal with the Warner Bros. Television Group. Reeves said in a statement:

“This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a longform format can afford — and getting to work with the incredibly talented Terence Winter, who has written so insightfully and powerfully about worlds of crime and corruption, is an absolute dream.”

One thing we don’t know is if Robert Pattinson will reprise his role of Batman in the series. We don’t really know if Batman will play a big part in it. He might just end up staying in the shadows.

Kevin Reilly, chief content officer, HBO Max, president TNT, TBS, and TruTV, hinted that they have long-term plans for an integrated Batman universe saying:

“Our collaboration with Warner Bros. and DC allows us to elaborate and grow fan connections across these powerful brands for years to come. This is Batman as most audiences have never seen before, and we know fans will want to spend more time in this new world inspired by the film.”

I can’t wait to see what comes of this! It’s a rare thing to see a movie and a TV series co-existing in the same universe at the same time. Marvel did it with their projects; and Blumhouse and NBCUniversal did it with the Purge franchise.

What are your thoughts on Reeves expanding on his Batman cinematic universe with a TV series focusing on the GCPD? I know that the Fox series Gotham already did that, but I’m sure this is going to a lot different.
