Matt Reeves Talks About Creating the Batcave, Batsuit, and Batmobile in THE BATMAN

DC Fandome was full of awesome footage and info from all the DC movies we are excited for that are coming in the next year or two. But probably the most exciting was the convention’s finale, which ended with our first trailer for Matt Reeves’ highly anticipated superhero dramaThe Batman. The trailer was exciting, and a great appetizer to get us all acquainted with the new caped crusader, played by Robert Pattinson. My favorite parts about his portrayal are the fact that his face isn’t squeezed into his mask (cough… Ben Affleck), and he doesn’t have the gravelly “Batman” voice that every other actor in recent memory has gone for. It’s refreshing.

Aside from the trailer, which was packed with info and tidbits to decipher, Reeves also chatted with the moderator and DC Fandome host, Aisha Tyler. He talked about creating the iconic suit, car, and lair, and the process he went through to get there. When digging into the different look of the Batsuit, he said:

“It's very practical, the idea is that [Batman] made it himself. It needs to look like he can move, but it's still evolving. He's in Year Two of being Batman.”

Some of the practicality was actually born from a conversation that Pattinson had with another famed actor about wearing the suit, and playing the role. He said:

"Rob actually talked to Christian Bale and he was like just make sure you’re actually able to relieve yourself.”

Good advice. He said costume designer Glyn Dillon came on early in the process, and it was important to everyone involved that they create a practical suit that Pattinson could move and fight in. He added:

“So they started illustrating and I'd say we spent easily a year to do the Batsuit and then to get into the Batmobile, and that, of course, that part's a dream. The idea of getting to do your own version of the Batmobile, you're just kind of like, 'Uh, what?' That's the incredible candy, right?”

Totally. That is the stuff that being a fan and a filmmaker is made of. He also talked about working with production designer James Chinlund (The Avengers, The Lion King) to get the right setting and feel for the Batcave:

"While I was writing, I actually already had a production designer on and so he would be sending -- as I'm writing scenes, I might send stuff to James, and he's like, 'Oh, well what about this for a Batcave?' And so yes, we had to build a set for it, but I think it's an incredibly original and different set. I think it's going to be really fun for the audience to discover what version of exactly this Batcave is going to be."

Everything about this iteration of Batman seems really exciting to me. A new actor taking on the role in Batman’s detective mode, a new timeline to explore, a whole crew of villains we haven’t seen in a while, and a new feel and point of view. I am so excited for what we have seen so far, and what is yet to be seen. What do you think of the new footage and info so far?

The Batman is expected on October 1, 2021
