Matt Reeves Teases More THE BATMAN Spinoffs After THE PENGUIN’s Emmy Sweep
The world of Matt Reeves’ The Batman has never felt more alive. Following the massive critical and awards success of The Penguin, Reeves is already teasing that Gotham’s story may continue to grow on television.
The Penguin, which follows Colin Farrell’s Oswald Cobblepot climbing the ranks of Gotham’s underworld, dominated this year’s 77th Primetime Emmy Awards. Out of 24 nominations, the series claimed nine wins, including major technical achievements and a standout victory for Cristin Milioti, who won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series for her riveting portrayal of Sofia Falcone.
With such momentum, the obvious question is: what’s next? Reeves didn’t shy away from addressing that curiosity during the Emmys. Reeves told IndieWire when asked about spinoffs:
“I totally do, we’ve talked about it, That’s where the priorities have been [The Batman Part II]. These conversations may or may not…
“Look, I’m not in control of DC, and I can only tell you what I’d love to do, and there are things they know we would love to do, and those conversations may begin again when it’s appropriate.”
Even before The Penguin, Reeves had other Gotham-set projects in the works, including series focused on the Gotham City Police Department and Arkham Asylum. Those shows were shelved, but the Emmy-winning success of The Penguin could breathe new life into them.
The popularity of Sofia Falcone, a character previously obscure to general audiences, also opens the door for fresh storytelling possibilities. The show itself leaves several unresolved threads, particularly Sofia’s connection to Zoë Kravitz’s Selina Kyle, suggesting fertile ground for future expansions.
Of course, the big priority remains The Batman: Part II. After several delays, Reeves has confirmed that the script, co-written with Mattson Tomlin, is finished and production is now set for spring 2026.
DC Studios co-head James Gunn has stood behind Reeves’ deliberate pace, stressing that a strong script must come before cameras roll.
Despite fan calls for Reeves’ Gotham to merge with the mainline DC Universe being built by Gunn and Peter Safran, both have been clear that Reeves’ saga stands apart. Officially branded a DC Elseworlds project, it allows his noir-inspired Gotham to continue without being bound by the larger continuity.
This means fans can enjoy multiple interpretations of Gotham at once, including the DCU’s own upcoming Clayface, an R-rated body horror film arriving in 2026.
While we don’t know when we’ll see the next spinoff, for now, the countdown is on for The Batman: Part II, set to hit theaters on October 1, 2027, with Clayface arriving first on September 11, 2026.
