Matt Smith Reveals Still Hasn’t Started His Work on STAR WARS: STARFIGHTER
Matt Smith is heading into the Star Wars galaxy at last, but it turns out his journey has yet to begin. The actor, known for roles in Doctor Who, Terminator Genisys, and House of the Dragon, is joining the upcoming film Star Wars: Starfighter, but despite the movie having been in production since August, Smith hasn’t stepped foot on set yet.
During an interview with A Rabbit’s Foot, Smith revealed that while the film has been shooting for months with stars Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray, his part in the process hasn’t kicked off.
“We’re going through the process of trying to find a costume, and sometimes you don’t know if you love a costume until you’ve worn it for a couple of days. I’m about to do Star Wars in December, and we’re sort of trying to develop the look for that.”
That means by the time Smith begins filming, nearly half a year will have passed since cameras started rolling. It’s an unusual gap for a major role, especially considering the movie is expected to be one of the biggest sci-fi releases of 2027.
Whether this delay means Smith’s screen time will be limited or that his scenes take place in a different phase of the story is still unclear.
What we do know is that his character is reportedly a villain, which is pretty exciting news for fans who remember that Smith was once set to appear in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker before his role was ultimately cut. Starfighter now gives him another shot to leave his mark on the franchise.
Directed by Shawn Levy and written by Jonathan Tropper, Star Wars: Starfighter centers on Gosling’s character as he protects his young nephew from dangerous enemies in a story set about five years after The Rise of Skywalker.
The film also features Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.
Star Wars: Starfighter opens in theaters on May 28, 2027.
