Matt Smith Seems Very Confused About the Villain He Plays in MORBIUS
Matt Smith was cast in the role of the villain Loxias Crown in Sony Picture’s upcoming Marvel film Morbius. During a recent interview with Screen Rant, Smith was asked about the character he plays, and when talking about it, he seemed very confused about what is going on with his character. Here’s his response:
“The truth is, I wasn’t aware of the great big history of the character in many respects. Because the script I was presented with doesn’t really delve into the past of him - or indeed the future. And isn’t someone else playing him? It’s all a bit confusing to me, to be honest with you. I took as my Bible just the actual script, is the honest truth of it. And it was all a bit odd whether it was Loxias [Crown] or not. I’m still not quite sure, to be honest.”
You’d think the filmmakers would give the actor a little bit more to work with and at least offer a clear explanation of the character that he’s playing! Maybe there’s a reason that word is spreading from people who have seen it that the movie is bad.
What I know about Loxias Crown is that in the comics, he is also known as Hunger and has been transformed into a being similar to a vampire. He’s not a true vampire, though, as the source of his transformation is more scientific.
Smith mentions in his comment that maybe someone else is playing the character? Maybe he is playing Loxias Crown, while another actor takes on the role of Hunger? I have no idea, all I know is that now he’s confusing me about who he’s playing!
The film follows Michael Morbius, "a scientist who suffered from a rare blood disease and attempted to cure himself to disastrous results. Instead of being cured, he became afflicted with a condition that was a form of vampirism — the thirst for blood, along with fangs and super strength — and fought Spider-Man. Over time, however, he became a slightly heroic figure in his own right and even headlined his own comic book titles.”
Jared Leto stars in the film, and he is joined by Jared Harris (Mad Men, The Crown, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, The Terror) along with Adria Arjona (Pacific Rim Uprising) as Martine Bancroft, who was engaged to Morbius before he accidentally turned himself into a vampire. She ends up becoming a potential victim as Morbius learns to cope with his insatiable bloodlust. Tyrese Gibson is also in the movie along with Michael Keaton, who is also back as Vulture.
Morbius was directed by Daniel Espinosa, and it will be released in theaters on April 1, 2022.
