Matthew Lillard Says He’s ‘Waiting for That Invitation’ From James Gunn to Join the DCU

During a recent panel at Los Angeles Comic-Con, the Matthew Lillard shared his hopes of stepping into the world of superheroes, ideally through a reunion with James Gunn, who is now steering the future of DC Studios.

The two first worked together when Gunn wrote Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, where Lillard played the beloved Shaggy.

“It’s been a long time. I have wanted to be in a superhero world,” Lillard told fans at the convention. “I’ve wanted to be in [the DCU], if anyone’s curious. If you run into James Gunn, tell him I’m available.”

Lillard went on to reflect on his relationship with Gunn and the possibility of reconnecting for a DC project. “[He’s] one of my dear friends,” he said. “I keep waiting for that invitation. I don’t know if it’s lost in the mail.”

As for Gunn, he’s already spoken about the casting process for the DCU, making it clear that while some fresh talent will be introduced, he also plans to keep the door open for familiar faces.

“We have hundreds of roles to cast. As I’ve always done, some will be brand new faces, some will be actors I’ve worked with before, and some will be actors you know who I’ve never worked with. What matters most is the actor fits the role and they’re easy to work with.”

Even if a DC role isn’t locked in yet, Lillard won’t be absent from the comic book world. He’s already set to appear in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, which is scheduled to hit Disney+ in March 2026.
