Max Willems to Lead THE EMPEROR OF MALIBU Series from CRAZY RICH ASIANS Author

Crazy Rich Asians was a wildly popular film last year. Well now, the author of the book that the film was based on, Kevin Kwan, has a TV series coming called The Emperor of Malibu with Max Willems being cast in the lead role. Willems is the latest casting announcement and he will be joining Deborah S. Craig and Ken Jeong who will be playing his parents in the show.

Emperor of Malibu...will follow Auggie and his college girlfriend, Kate, as his outrageous family descends on the couple to win their son back and test-drive the American dream.

Reportedly, Kwan wrote Auggie with Harry Shum Jr. in mind for the role, but Shum chose to instead join Heart of Life. The pilot episode has the following synopsis:

The pilot...centers on Auggie (Willems), an environmental lawyer and son of a Chinese tech billionaire who announces his engagement to an American woman — and is terrified of how his parents will react to the news.

The Emperor of Malibu is a pilot that was written by Kwan and David Sangalli and ordered by CBS. If ordered to series, fans should expect it this fall. Andy Ackerman is directing with Christina Lee, Michelle Nader, and Danielle Stokdyk serving as showrunners.
