Mel Brooks Continues To Tease a SPACEBALLS Sequel and Shares His Love of STAR WARS
Mel Brooks has been teasing a possible Spaceballs sequel for years, and while there have been no reports of the film going into development, the legendary comedy filmmaker is still talking about it.
Brooks, who is 97 years old, recently participated in a panel at the TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood after a screening or his 1987 movie Spaceballs.
During the conversation with TCM’s Ben Mankiewicz, Brooks shared some fun stories about the films he worked on and his time in Hollywood.
One story he told involved a meeting he had with Alfred Hitchcock about getting his blessing for the spoof film High Anxiety. He explained that Hitchcock ate a full meal complete with steak, shrimp, and more, and he was still hungry when he was done, so he went ahead and ordered that full meal again!
The conversation eventually turned to Spaceballs and in a clip that you can watch over at io9, Brooks talks about working with George Lucas and how the creator of Star Wars was okay with Brooks making the parody.
The one thing Lucas told Brooks he couldn’t do was make his own Spaceballs merchandise, like toys and stuff, which he never did.
Brooks then contemplated making Spaceballs 2 and if he moved forward with that film he wondered if he would be able to make merch for that movie. It’s a good question!
I’m happy that Brooks is still thinking about a Spaceballs sequel, but if he actually does it, he better get on that soon!
Brooks also talked about his love for the Star Wars franchise, saying: “I loved it. I loved the picture. I thought it was unusual. I thought it was incredibly original and it was a combination of all the things that I loved when I was a kid, like Ivanhoe and Robin Hood.”
He added: “It was kind of like a fairy tale with zaps. A lot of zaps. But it was good. It was a good movie and its heart was in the right place.”
Years ago, Brooks said the sequel would be titled Spaceballs: The Search for More Money. But, who knows if that’s something he’s actively developing.
