Mel Gibson Confirms He's Directing LETHAL WEAPON 5
A few years ago we heard that Mel Gibson was in talks to direct Lethal Weapon 5, and now in a recent interview, the actor and director confirmed it.
While appearing on the Inspire Me podcast series, Gibson offered an update on the long-awaited project saying: "I'm gonna direct the fifth film in the Lethal Weapon series.”
He continued: “Richard Donner, who did the other four, sadly passed away and he was a good friend, and he kind of tasked me with carrying the flag home on that one. So it'll be an honor for me to do that.”
Gibson went on to talk about the process of developing the screenplay, which Donner started before his passing. "He had gotten a fair way into writing the screenplay and we've used what was there. We kept kind of poking at it, working it and I'm pretty happy with it, it's good, I had a lot of fun doing it.”
I mean, if anyone is going to carry the torch of this franchise, Gibson seems like the guy to do it. He’s certainly got the directing chops.
Gibson previously shared that the film had “a really good screenplay” and “they had a really good template”. He also said: “I had the honor of sitting down, after Richard passed away, with the writer and doing a couple more drafts and trying to do it in the spirit of what we thought Donner might [want] because I knew the guy so well. We tried to get that flavor, and we were pretty happy with what we came up with.”
It sounds like the film is going to happen, and all I can hope for is that it reaches the same bar as the previously Lethal Weapon films that were made because I love those movies.
