Mel Gibson to Direct Andrew Garfield in HACKSAW RIDGE
It looks like Mel Gibson is getting ready to jump back behind the camera and direct a new movie! He’s currently in talks to helm a film called Hacksaw Ridge. The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield is in discussions to take on the lead role.
The film will tell the true story of World War II US army medic Desmond T. Doss. He was was at the Battle of Okinawa, and what makes his story interesting is the fact that he refused to kill anyone. In the process became became the first Conscientious Objector in American history to win the Congressional Medal of Honor. For those of you not familiar with what a Conscientious Objector is, it’s an ”individual who has claimed the right to refuse to perform military service on the grounds of freedom of thought, conscience, and/or religion.”
This seems like a great project for Gibson, who previously brought us films such as Braveheart, Passion of the Christ, and Apocalypto. He knows how to tell a great story about characters who are prepared to go through hell for their principles and in the end prevail over their hardships.
I could see Gibson and Garfield make a great filmmaking team, and I hope these are the guys we see bring this story to life on the big screen.
