Melissa Barrera Will Face Off With Killer Orcas in Renny Harlin’s New Horror Movie BLACK TIDES
Scream star Melissa Barrera is set to star in Black Tides, a new ocean-set horror thriller from action-horror director Renny Harlin. She joins John Travolta, Álvaro Mel (A Perfect Story), and Travolta’s daughter Ella Bleu Travolta for a survival story that’s about to make people think twice before getting back in the water.
The film follows Travolta’s character, Bill Pierce, who heads to Europe to reconnect with his estranged daughter Rebecca (Barrera) and her son Sebastian (Dylan Torrell).
What begins as an emotional reunion quickly spirals into chaos when their boat comes under attack from a pod of killer orcas with a taste for blood.
Black Tides is written by Chris Sparling (Greenland) and Ángel Agudo (Apocalypse Z), and production is already underway in Gran Canaria, Spain.
Director Harlin is thrilled to have Barrera aboard, saying: “Melissa brings both fire and vulnerability to a role that demands it all – emotionally, physically, and cinematically. She and John are movie magic together, and they elevate every beat of this story.”
Producer Adrián Guerra also praised the production’s ambition, noting: “Shooting at sea is one of the hardest things you can do in film but the footage we're getting is stunning. The cast has bonded in a way that's rare and powerful, and Renny's directing chops are on full display – balancing raw spectacle with real human emotion.”
Barrera’s become something of a modern horror mainstay. Beyond Scream and Scream VI, she’s recently starred in the vampire thriller Abigail and the monster-infused dark comedy Your Monster.
For Harlin, Black Tides marks a return to familiar territory as he famously directed the cult classic Deep Blue Sea in 1999, a film that’s since become a fan-favorite among shark movie enthusiasts.
Harlin also most recently worked on the new The Strangers trilogy, which hasn’t been doing well. There’s one film in that trilogy set to be released.
