Meryl Streep and Sigourney Weaver Lead NYC Thriller USEFUL IDIOTS
Two Hollywood legends are joining forces for a gripping new thriller set in the heart of New York City. Meryl Streep and Sigourney Weaver are set to star in Useful Idiots, a psychological and political drama directed by Joseph Cedar and produced by Fifth Season and Black Bear.
The story centers on Diane Castle (Streep), a veteran journalist who’s spent years writing about Manhattan’s high-end real estate market. Once passionate about her craft, Diane now finds herself jaded and unsatisfied, stuck producing glowing profiles of the rich and powerful.
But when an unprecedented penthouse sale crosses her desk, her instincts kick in. Curiosity about the mysterious buyer leads her down a dark rabbit hole, one that could land her the biggest story of her career.
At the heart of the mystery is a shadowy oligarch whose influence stretches across the city and beyond. His empire is guarded by a ring of fixers, enablers, and a sharp young strategist.
As Diane digs deeper, her investigation starts to unravel a dangerous web of corruption that threatens not only her but also her family and everyone connected to her.
Cedar co-wrote the script with 60 Minutes producer Shachar Bar-On, crafting what promises to be a taut, character-driven thriller about power, truth, and moral compromise.
Black Bear is fresh off releasing the Sydney Sweeney boxing drama Christy. For Streep, this marks her first major film role since playing the U.S. President in Adam McKay’s 2021 satire Don’t Look Up. She’s currently part of the cast of Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building and filming The Devil Wears Prada 2.
Weaver, meanwhile, continues her epic collaboration with James Cameron, reprising her role in the Avatar films, including the upcoming Avatar: Fire and Ash. She’s also set to appear in The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Also, I thought I’d just remind you, Meryl Streep was originally cast as Ripley in Ridley Scott’s Alien before Sigourney Weaver jumped into the role.
