METAL GEAR SOLID Movie Finds a Writer
Sony Pictures has hired Jay Basu to write the script for their live-action adaptation of the hit video game franchise Metal Gear Solid. Basu is an up-and-coming writer, who is also working with Universal Pictures to help develop new films based on their classic movie monsters. He also co-wrote Monsters: Dark Continent.
I’d like to think that Metal Gear Solid has a really good chance of being a great film, especially with The Kings of Summer director Jordan Vogt-Roberts at the helm. The guy seems like a talented storyteller, who seems to have a knack for solid character development, which is exactly what Solid Snake needs.
This is a great gig for both Vogt-Roberts and Basu, who are two young filmmakers that are still trying to prove themselves in Hollywood. I hope they use this opportunity to give us fans a movie that we can be excited about. They will be developing the feature under the guidance of producers Avi and Ari Arad (Spider-Man, Daredevil).
Metal Gear Solid was created by Hideo Kojima, and the game became popular on the PlayStation when it was released back in 1998. It follows Solid Snake, a soldier who infiltrates a nuclear weapons facility to neutralize the terrorist threat from Foxhound, a renegade special forces unit. Snake must liberate two hostages — one the president of a major arms manufacturer — confront the terrorists, and stop them from launching a nuclear strike.
