Mia Goth is Playing Two Roles in Guillermo del Toro’s FRANKENSTEIN and Her Second Role Has Been Revealed

When Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein was announced, and Mia Goth was confirmed as part of the cast, fans naturally assumed she'd be taking on the role of Victor Frankenstein’s beloved, Elizabeth. But, it turns out she’s also playing a second character in the film, and it’s one that no one really saw coming.

According to a new report from Variety, the actress will not only portray Elizabeth but will also step into the role of Victor Frankenstein’s mother. Yes, Goth is also playing the woman Victor loves and the woman who raised him.

The psychological layers of that casting choice alone are wild, and according to Oscar Isaac, who plays Victor, that complexity was very intentional.

“Guillermo would always be like, ‘He wants that lechita.’ When everything goes wrong, he just wants that mama’s milk. (To drive the point home, Goth plays both Victor’s mother and Elizabeth, the woman he falls in love with who happens to be betrothed to his brother.)"

Yeah, it’s gonna get weird. The dual role of mother and lover is adding an entirely different thematic layer, one that’s bound to spark plenty of discussion.

Speaking about del Toro’s vision, Goth said:

"I think people are going to love how epic it is, and the scale of it, it's such a feast. But I think they will also be incredibly moved by it and maybe surprised by how much heart went into this. It's a lifelong project for Guillermo."

Del Toro has been dreaming of making Frankenstein for decades, and when the film was officially confirmed, he said:

“It’s a movie I have been wanting to do for 50 years since I saw the first Frankenstein. I had an epiphany, and it’s basically a movie that required a lot of growth and a lot of tools that I couldn’t have done 10 years ago. Now I’m brave or crazy enough or something, and we’re gonna tackle it.”

Frankenstein will make its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on August 30. After that, Netflix will roll out the film with a limited three-week theatrical run starting October 17, before it hits the streaming service on November 7.

The cast includes Jacob Elordi as the Monster, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, and Christian Convery.

Del Toro has admired Mary Shelley’s novel and even honored her in his 2018 BAFTA acceptance speech for The Shape of Water, saying:

“The most important figure from English legacy is, incredibly, for me, a teenager by the name of Mary Shelley, and she has remained a figure as important in my life as if she were family. And so many times when I want to give up, when I think about giving up, when people tell me that dreaming of the movies and the stories I dream are impossible, I think of her.”

With that level of reverence and creative firepower behind it, Frankenstein is shaping up to be something haunting, heartfelt, and totally unique.
